What is Nia?
Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings teach people how to get in their body, learn about The Body’s Way and cultivate body-centered awareness. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities.
Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.
What is the Nia Experience?
The Nia experience is how we describe the sensation of taking a Nia class. Typically Nia classes include 55 minutes of movement to diverse music. Every Nia class has 7 Cycles beginning with a focus and intent. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: base, core and upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels.
How does Nia work?
Nia has 52 moves that optimize the body’s natural design. Nia choreography is body-centered and allows practitioners to connect to nine diverse movement styles: Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Nia classes balance form with freedom encouraging people to personalize the movements making choices for pleasure and comfort.
What is Nia’s purpose?
Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education, we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own.
4-10 May 2018 with Kelle Rae Oien-Golden Bay
Thrilled to be producing this upcoming Nia White Belt Training here in the top of the South Island. The 7 day intensive will be at the beautiful Shambala Retreat in Golden Bay, with accommodation and catering options available onsite.
The White Belt takes you on a journey of self-discovery by exploring the art of sensation. Beginning with the Joy of Movement, you learn 13 principles for body-centered awareness. Each principle teaches you a variety of somatic skills for connecting to physical sensation in your body. Through the science, craft and art of sensation, you will learn Nia's body-centered approach to health, wellness and fitness. Crafting with sensation is the starting point for all Nia teachers. The Art of Sensation is what brings magic to the Nia class experience.
Nia White Belt teaches you the Art of Sensation through five core areas of study.
- Movement - the study of moving, health + potential
- Anatomy - the study of body parts + systems
- Science - the study of body awareness, health + vitality
- Music - the study of sound, health + expression
- Philosophy - the study of the body's inherent wisdom.
Anyone can take the Nia White Belt; no experience is required. If you want to teach Nia, the Nia White Belt is your first step.
